DITCH STORE-BOUGHT LIP BALMS: SHEA BUTTER

With so many natural, healthy options out there, why would you ever want to spend money on store-bought, chemical-filled lip balms that mess with the body’s natural moisture mechanisms?

I used to be this close to turning into a lip balm addict: the incredibly large selection of flavours and guaranteed feel-good promise made me so hyped about using it, but the honest reality is lip-balms are, for the most part, crammed-full with petroleum, fragrances, artificial colours, and a bunch of other nasty things such as camphor, phenol or parabens. Now why would you use petrochemicals on your body? Cause of dry, sore, chapped lips? Then let’s take a look at the healthy alternatives we’ve got:

1) SHEA BUTTER: It’s got the right consistency and works in harmony with your lips to keep ’em nice and plump. Tastes amazing (think a nutty flavour), is really affordable, lasts you forever and makes you feel so good about honouring your body. SCORE! (You can also take it with you on a plane, when chapped lips most need some extra moisture, and it won’t qualify as a liquid).

2) COCOA BUTTER: Tastes amazing, smells delicious and keeps your lips just as hydrated as the shea butter. Only problem would be the consistency – stays rock hard for most of the time, then feels a bit too oily when you put it on. Your choice 😉

3) COCONUT OIL: Again, amazing at keeping your lips nice and moist, tastes delish (unless coconut is not for you), but can get a bit too oily when putting it on, plus it’s kinda difficult to carry a giant jar of it all over the place (unless you find a tiny, cute, purse-sized container – let me know about that if you do!).
